Bennie M. Baker, 98, of Lewistown passed away Thursday evening October 13, 2005 at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center of natural causes. 

Bennie was born November 22, 1906 in Clancy, Montana the daughter of Marie and Howard Haines, the eighth of twelve children.  She attended schools at Clancy and Helena, graduating from Helena High School in 1924 and Montana State Normal School at Dillon in 1928.  After completing Normal School she taught at various country schools in western and northeastern Montana for the next several years. 

She met Louis Baker while teaching near Lustre, Montana.  They were married on December 26, 1930 and their marriage flourished for the next seventy years until Louis' death in 2001.  During the hard times of the depression years, Bennie accompanied Louis as he participated in the construction of Fort Peck Dam, and worked at various ranch and temporary jobs in Montana and Washington.  In 1942 they moved to a ranch on the Divide, near Lewistown, which they operated for the next ten years.  In 1951 they purchased a motel in Lewistown, which they operated until Louis' retirement in 1974. 

Bennie is survived by sons Lee (Carole) Baker of Punta Gorda, FL and Gary (Pat) Baker of Billings, foster daughter Vicki Johnson of Pinehurst, ID and sister Dorrie Simpson of Pacifica, CA. She is also survived by grandchildren, Brett Baker, Brian Baker, Diane Hanzel, Kristi Knerr, Brad Hanzel, Tami Hanson, Shanda Snodgrass and great granchildren Sara Baker, Mark Baker, Colin Baker, Dylen Knerr, Arley Knerr, Tyra Knerr, Zachary Hanson, Calista Hanson, Tanner Chada, and Mykayla Snodgrass.

She was preceded in death by her husband Louis, parents Marie and Howard Haines, daughter Billie Baker Hanzel, brothers Harry, Fran, Jess, Cecil and Merle, and sisters Bea, Kath, Helen, Floss, and Lois.
Memorial services for Bennie will be Tuesday, October 18 at 9:30 AM in the First Christian Church.  Cremation has taken place at her request.  Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
